First BJJ Tournament? Here’s How to Not Freak Out!

Your first comp doesn’t have to be scary (And no—you don’t need to train like a maniac)

Hey,

Your first BJJ tournament is coming up? You might be thinking:

  • “Should I train twice a day?”

  • “Should I cut weight?”

  • “Do I even belong out there?”

Take a breath. You’ve got this. Your first comp isn’t about being perfect. It’s about showing up, rolling hard, and learning from the experience.

Here’s what actually helps:

✅ Stick to your normal training—don’t go nuts
✅ Lock in 2–4 sessions a week and show up no matter what
✅ Start your rolls standing to prep for comp day
✅ Don’t chill in bad spots—fight to improve your position
✅ Record your matches and learn from them
✅ And above all—have fun. Seriously.

And the most important thing is that no matter how it goes, you’ll come back better.

P.S. Got a teammate stressing about their first tournament? Forward this to them. Might calm some nerves (and stop the overthinking).
