Seven-time ADCC champion, four-time EBI king, and a man who is widely considered the greatest no-gi grappler of all time. Yet, many of Gordon Ryan's titles don't even appear on his Wikipedia page. With a staggering number of wins, it seems his success has outpaced the record-keepers.

So, we’re going to embark on a rapid, chronological journey to count every major belt and superfight that built his dynasty.

THE RISE TO BLACK BELT!

Gordon's journey began at the age of 15, but his rise to the elite began in 2015 with the brown belt. He competed in the IBJJF World No-Gi Championship and won gold with no points scored against him. That same weekend, he won the Newaza Challenge with five submissions and twelve minutes of mat time. This "green light moment" demonstrated that he was ready for the black belt division.

Just weeks after receiving his black belt in February 2016, he accepted a last-minute spot at the Eddie Bravo Invitational, EBI 6. As a new black belt, he tore through the bracket, heel-hooked his way to the final, and won his first black belt title and big paycheck in a viral performance that shocked the grappling world.

In the years that followed, Gordon won three more EBI titles (EBI 8, 11, and 14), cementing his dominance in the submission-only format.

The King of ADCC!

The ADCC World Championship is grappling's Olympics, and Gordon Ryan has a legendary record there. In his debut in 2017, he won gold in the 88kg division and silver in the absolute category, an unprecedented accomplishment for a first-timer.

He returned in 2019 and advanced to the brutally tough 99kg division. After defeating his opponents, he advanced to the absolute division and won it as well, earning a spectacular double-gold victory and the official nickname "The King".

In 2022, he accomplished something unprecedented: he won the +99kg division and competed in the superfight. He won his third weight class gold and faced the legendary André Galvão. Ryan submitted the six-time champion, which had not been done at ADCC in over a decade, cementing his status as the greatest of all time.

Then, at ADCC 2024, he participated in two different superfights. He first defeated his rival Felipe Pena, 2-0 in extra time. Despite tearing his knee in that match, he returned the next day and dominated two-time champion Yuri Simoes, winning by a score of 21-0 to claim his seventh ADCC gold medal.

BEYOND ADCC!

In 2018, Ryan competed on the points-based IBJJF circuit to demonstrate his dominance across all formats. He won two gold medals at the Pan No-Gi and World No-Gi Championships, one in his weight class and one in the absolute division.

Otherwise, Gordon Ryan is the only athlete with both brown and black-belt IBJJF No-Gi world titles. He also added a WNO Heavyweight belt to his collection in 2022, defending it against Felipe Pena in a grueling 45-minute fight.

CONCLUSION

Gordon Ryan's journey from purple belt bronze to unrivaled reign is one of obsession and dedication. When it comes to major titles, the numbers are objective: seven ADCC gold medals, four EBI championships, and an IBJJF double-double. His record reflects a career spent hunting submissions and breaking records. So, after laying everything out, what do you think is the single greatest achievement on this list?
